What is Website Speed Optimization (WSO)?

When Google announced that one of the main factors that affect search ranking is website speed, the way website owners and webmasters design and re-design their websites has dramatically changed in response to the website speed search ranking criteria. This has also become one of the foremost considerations in Search Engine Optimization (SEO).
What is Website Speed?
Website speed is a measure of time how long a website (or a webpage) responds to web requests. Practically, downloading a website depends upon the user’s connection rate. Standard connection rate varies from one geographical locations to another. That is why website speed is commonly measured on a 56kbps modem connections or T1 connections. Google might somehow consider the connection rate discrepancy among internet users worldwide so rating your website speed in one location may differ from one place to another depending on the average connection rate per geographical region.
Why Google Stress So Much on Website Speed?
Practically, faster websites could save operating costs. It is a new measure that Google imposed for their search engine optimization criteria. Google, just like any other technological innovations, are getting obsessed with speed. Consider a user who is not be happy on the first page of Google SERP in response to his query because these websites load slowly. This could affect the user’s attitude towards using search engine as a primary “oracle” portal. Besides, numerous studies claimed that conversion rates are far higher for websites that load faster than their competitors that load slower.
What are the Factors Affecting Website Speed?
1. TOTAL HTML – the total number of HTML files on a particular web page (including the main HTML file).
2. TOTAL OBJECTS – the total number of objects that will affect web page delay.
3. TOTAL IMAGES – the total number of images on a particular web page.
4. TOTAL CSS – the total number of external CSS files on a particular web page.
5. TOTAL SIZE – the total size of a particular web page measured in bytes, which greatly affects 56kbps connection rate or lower.
6. TOTAL SCRIPT – the total number of external script files on a particular web page.
7. HTML SIZE – the total size of HTML file. Usually affected by the HEIGHT and WIDTH webpage images.
8. IMAGES SIZE – the total size of in a particular web page.
9. SCRIPT SIZE – the total size of external scripts in a particular web page.
10. CSS SIZE – the total size of r external CSS on a particular web page.
11. MULTIMEDIA SIZE – the total size of all external multimedia files.
What are the Good Parameter of These Factors Affecting Website Speed?
1. TOTAL HTML – Recommended is 1 which most browsers can multithread. Minimizing HTTP requests is key for web site optimization.
2. TOTAL OBJECTS – Above 20 objects per page accounts more than 80% of whole page latency. So 20 objects is advisable per web page.
3. TOTAL IMAGES – Above 20 images per page accounts more than 80% of whole page latency. So 20 oimages is advisable per web page.
4. TOTAL CSS – Arounf 3-4 external CSS files.
5. TOTAL SIZE – Less than 100K to achieve sub 20 second response times on 56K connections.
6. TOTAL SCRIPT – Ideally, 1-2 scripts only.
7. HTML SIZE – Less than 50K.
8. IMAGES SIZE – Less than 100K.
9. SCRIPT SIZE – Less than 20K.
10. CSS SIZE – Less than 8K.
11. MULTIMEDIA SIZE – Less than 10K.
What to Do to Achieve Higher Website Speed Optimization Index?
1. TOTAL HTML – Minimize the total number of HTML to 1
2. TOTAL OBJECTS – Reduce the total number of objects of your website to 20 objects per page. Try to combine, refine, and optimize your external objects. Replace graphic rollovers with CSS rollovers to speed display and minimize HTTP requests. Consider using CSS sprites to help consolidate decorative images. Using CSS techniques such as colored backgrounds, borders, or spacing instead of graphic techniques can reduce HTTP requests. Replace graphic text headers with CSS text headers to further reduce HTTP requests. Finally, consider optimizing parallel downloads by using different hostnames or a CDN to reduce object overhead.
3. TOTAL IMAGES – Consider reducing the total number of images less than 20 per page. Try to combine, replace, and optimize your graphics. Replace graphic rollover menus with CSS rollover menus to speed display and minimize HTTP requests. Consider using CSS sprites to help consolidate decorative images. Use CSS techniques such as colored backgrounds, borders, or spacing instead of graphic techniques to reduce HTTP requests. Replace graphic text headers with CSS text headers to further reduce HTTP requests. Finally, consider optimizing parallel downloads by using different hostnames to reduce object overhead.
4. TOTAL CSS – Make it less than 4 total number of external CSS files per page. Because external CSS files must be in the HEAD of your HTML document, they must load first before any BODY content displays. Although they are cached, CSS files slow down the initial display of your page. Remember to place CSS files in the HEAD and JavaScript files at the end of the BODY to enable progressive display.
5. TOTAL SIZE – Consider reducing total page size to less than 100K to achieve sub 20 second response times on 56K connections. Pages over 100K exceed most attention thresholds at 56Kbps, even with feedback.
6. TOTAL SCRIPT – Consider reducing to 1 or 2 external script files. Combine, refactor, and minify to optimize your JavaScript files. Ideally you should have one (or even embed scripts for high-traffic pages) on your pages. Consider suturing JavaScript files together at the server to minimize HTTP requests. Placing external JavaScript files at the bottom of your BODY, and CSS files in the HEAD enables progressive display in XHTML web pages.
7. HTML SIZE – Make it less than 50K. Assuming that you specify the HEIGHT and WIDTH of your images, this size allows your HTML to display content in under 10 seconds, the average time users are willing to wait for a page to display without feedback.
8. IMAGES SIZE – Make it less 100K. Consider switch graphic formats to achive smaller file sizes (from JPEG to PNG for example). Finally, substitute CSS techniques for graphics techniques to create colored borders, backgrounds, and spacing.
9. SCRIPT SIZE – make it less than 20K. Consider optimizing your JavaScript for size, combining them, and using HTTP compression where appropriate for any scripts placed in the HEAD of your documents. You can substitute CSS menus for JavaScript-based menus to minimize or even eliminate the use of JavaScript.
10. CSS SIZE – Make it less than 8K.
11. MULTIMEDIA SIZE – Make it less than 10K.
Useful Tools to Measure and Optimize Website Speed:
1. Page Speed- an open source Firefox/Firebug add-on that evaluates the performance of web pages and gives suggestions for improvement.
2. YSlow – a free tool from Yahoo! that suggests ways to improve website speed.
3. WebPagetest – shows a waterfall view of your pages’ load performance plus an optimization checklist.
4. In Google Webmaster Tools, Labs > Site Performance shows the speed of your website as experienced by users around the world (requires Firebug and Page Speed Addons.

The Marketing Nature of Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Entering the search engine arena is more of a battle of agility than of strength. The evolving nature of search engine algorithms defies every established idea in dominating the search engine rankings. What could be effective presently may not be outstanding after 3 months or so. The artificial intelligence applied to search engine spiders is no longer restricted to codes and syntax but even extends to the level of expert conditioning.

SEO as Marketing StrategyApparently, search engine optimization (SEO) is getting closer and closer to embracing its nature as an effective marketing method rather than bug-tracking and loophole passing tool. The following key aspects of search engine optimization illustrate its marketing nature that could shake the very foundation of this fast-paced search engine strategy:

Keyword Research

Beginning with keyword research may make you feel that learning about SEO is a highly procedural activity. Going to Wordtracker, Search-Based Keyword Suggestion, Keyword Spy, or taking down big tags in the blogosphere clouds are the initial steps. But backtracking down may only lead you back into the customer’s shoes, picking the brand names they wanted to buy. Apparently, the customer is always right. Online users dictate the word combinations your search engine strategy is dying to dominate.

Link Building

The increasing number of web surfers have generated an astonishing volume of pages published in the web. Gone are the days of link buying as the value of PR has been reduced to the lowest level. People are creating pages day by day that may be directly relevant to your niche. Chasing haughty webmasters in order to ask for link exchanges that may take a day or two is now proving to be highly impractical. Link building has become a word-of-the-mouth strategy wherein people post your story on their personal pages and the viral process moves on. So you better make your story remarkable to get people interested in it. This method will cut your effort a million fold.

Social Media Optimization

This section is just another landscape in the same yard. Its objective is to emphasize your product line so that more people can see it. It is an eye-catching platform that will help them read between the lines easily and understand what you are actually endorsing. It is no more than promoting your advertisement campaigns in a station more people are patronizing.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is a great marketing arena. It entails identifying target customers, and then anticipating them. Finally it will satisfy the customers to achieve the company’s profitable ends. It is simply introducing the right product in the right place at the right price.

Top 10 SEO Checklists in Moving a Website to a New Domain

Moving an entire website to a new hosted domain can have some downturns. The page relevance of the old site does not pass on to the new one in an instant. As a result, the ranking of the old website is expected to drop while the new domain could start from scratch. Not only that, average daily traffic of the old website may not shift to the new one. These hurting effects could be so disastrous to your business – even though you still have control over the two domains promoting the same products or services.

But working things appropriately could minimize the negative effects of moving from a website domain to another. It is important to have everything in check so search engines could not flag the new one as duplicate (or worse spam). At the same time, loyal visitors will not be confused if the site redirection seems truly legitimate. The following are SEO-friendly checklist could help you figure out the things you need to do in transferring to a new domain:

1. Make a 301 Redirect Map

Moving to a new domain is similar to making a mirror site. It is better to have one-to-one correspondence of every page in the old site to the new one. Using Xenu or GSiteCrawler can help you identify every page in the old site to have a corresponding page in the new domain. To verify if old site’s ranking have been routed to the URL, you can use Web CEO or Rank Checker.

2. Avoid 404 Errors

The most common problem in running a redirection of URL’s from one site to another is 404 errors or page non-existence. Xenu is a useful tool in determining 404 errors in the redirection scheme. Thereby, you can locate those pages with 404 errors and appropriately make a valid URL redirect.

3. Check the Internal Linking Structure of Every Page in the Old Site

Internal links from an old page should have valid redirects to the corresponding page in the new site. You can use Xenu to check for broken links in the internal linking structure of every page in the old site. Then you can use Text Replace to make the necessary changes in the internal linking structure to point to the corresponding pages in the new site.

4. Add a New Domain the Each of your Webmaster Accounts

Presumably, you have a webmaster account for Google, Yahoo, and Bing for the old site. You can add the new domain using the same Webmaster account to associate this domain to the old site. It is also advisable to resubmit you r old site’s sitemap bearing the updated internal links for 301 redirects.

5. Keep the Control Over the Old Site for 4-6 Months

It is crucial to check every now and then if all redirects had been successful. So having full access to the old domain is necessary to make the necessary changes and transfer of page relevance from the old page to the new page. Also, it could take 1-3 months to stabilize the rankings of your contents with their new URL’s in Google, Yahoo, and Bing.

6. Gather All External Links.

Major search engines like Google, Yahoo, and Bing usually have a list of your old site’s external links. Gathering all these links could be helpful in contacting the webmasters of these external links for the updates you’ve made in transferring your contents to a new site.

7. Take Note of the Top Referring Links to Your Old Site

In your old site’s webmaster account, you can determine which sites usually points to your old domain. You can also contact as much as 200-300 webmasters of these sites to update their links to your new hosted domain.

8. Post in the Webmaster Forum

It might also help if you inform officially that you are moving your old site’s contents to the new one. In doing so, search engines might somehow determine that such transfer of contents are valid and legitimate. You can also explain the reason of moving into the new domain.

9. Monitor and Compare Your Two Sites in Terms of Ranking

This is often important especially if your new site’s content is not being crawled or indexed in two weeks while previous pages rankings are dropping. You can then post in the Webmaster Forum about the problem. Usually, it could take at least 3 months for search engines to deliver stable ranking reports for targeted keywords so it is crucial to monitor ranking tweaks within the moving period until official search engine ranking updates.

10. Promote Your Site Using Media and Online Marketing Hubs

You can post an official press release of moving your website to a new domain. While you establish the legitimacy of the new domain as your new official website, you can also build inbound links coming from these press release pages for the contents of your new site. You can also buy for an ad in a particular webpage or blogsite for your target keywords. You can also launch an email marketing campaign side by side with social media promotions in twitter, Facebook, and other social media sites. Lastly, update all your contact information using the new site.

Choosing Target Keywords for Better Conversion

Choosing the Right keyword for Your BusinessHaving to choose target keywords for you website really requires higher degree of decision-making skills. You can have popular keywords but highly competitive. Or you can have not-so-popular ones yet deliver you low traffic. The worst of course are those that do not help in your return on investment (ROI).

Perhaps you would be familiar with long-tail keywords. Some search engine marketing (SEM) specialists would tell you search queries are into these trends. Of course that would need to be statistically verified. Or you might as well check if your long-tail keywords would likely be what relevant visitors are keying into the search field. Afterall your set of target keywords determines the theme of your website content, search engine optimization (SEO) strategies, and website navigation structure leading your visitors to the “Conversion Page”.

Keyword Sales Value

Determining sales value of your chosen keywords needs a lot of test parameters. You can check for some free online tools or purchase a software for this. The bottom-line is that you must find out if these keywords were likely be what search engine users place in a search box when they are ready to spend money to avail your products and services.

Consider set of keywords SEO, SEO Expert, and SEO Company. Of course these keywords are highly inter-related. The first keyword has an oozing 551,000,000 competing pages where most likely users just input to have some information about what is SEO. But the second and third keywords were being used frequently by business owners and entrepreneurs who would like to launch a search engine marketing (SEM) campaign. These keywords will likely lead your potential customers to ask for quotes about your products or services.

Law of Operating Chances on Traffic

Your keywords must deliver you sufficient amount of traffic for a higher chance of conversion. The more visitors a certain website could have, the higher the chances of converting these visitors as clients. Afterall search engine marketing (SEM) is no different to conventional advertising to target a larger market spectrum as possible.

Consider choosing between two keywords to optimize for your future SEO campaign. The first keyword makes your site visible in the first page of search engine results pages (SERP’s) but delivers you a 3-digit monthly traffic. The second keyword placed your site on the second page of SERP’s but delivers to your site 4 to 5 digits of monthly traffic. Then it is worth optimizing for the latter since it gives your site exposure to a higher number of potential buyers.

Adwords Ads as Indicators

The rule of the thumb applies on this. Beware if you can’t see any Google Adwords ads on Google search engine when you key in your target keyword. If you would be spying on sorts of keywords most internet marketers are investing, Google Adwords can be a useful parameter. Afterall your competitors have also invested and even poured so much resources for an effective PPC management for these keywords.

Persevering Searchers

So it is not necessary that your site got first page ranking on particular keywords. But rather it is necessary to check whether these keywords are useful in increasing your return on investment (ROI). If you’ve come to think as an intelligent buyer, you would be satisfied to have a number of options where will you going to purchase. This means that as an intelligent buyer, you would pursue on the next pages of SERP’s until you gather reliable products and services.

Does PageRank (PR) Still Matter?

As stated by Google Webmaster Trends Analyst Susan Moskwa, Google Pagerank (PR) has already been dropped from the roll of more or less 200 Google Ranking Factors. Whether true or Google has just been bluffing around about their old-aged algorithm, the alleged desertion of the PageRank (PR) Algorithm could greatly affect the techniques and strategies used in Search Engine Optimization (SEO), in particular, and to the internet marketing campaign of every business website, in general.

The main reason for the proposition of abandoning PageRank is the rampant link buying over the internet. As Google greatly discourages paid links to dominate search engine rankings on the search engine results pages (SERPs), the declaration of discarding PageRank Algorithm could be an effective scheme. However, before adjusting the SEO campaign to entertain this declaration, the following considerations might help one to evaluate if PageRank Algorithm still matters:

1. The PageRank is still activated on every page in the web. This means that the algorithm still exists and every page is being evaluated based on their page value in the World Wide Web.

2. There is a very recent PageRank Update on every page of the web. Although Google’s major PR update is expected to occur during last week of September or first week of October, the latest PR results had been observed last week of October. Imagine the database resources being allocated for this algorithm that Google has allegedly abandoned.

3. The recent PR update is still a very powerful tool for web marketers and internet users around the world to evaluate the authority value of every page in the web. PR value is being closely associated to page credibility.

4. Whether Google is just downplaying the importance of Pagerank in the their SERPs, every little bit of the entire Google Ranking Algorithm could mean a lot in indexing pages of their relevance to every target keyword (especially highly competitive keywords).

5. The PageRank Algorithm could be the first algorithm when spider-based search engine Google has been conceptualized. Taking out a major algorithm for the entire ranking system could mean a lot of work in the sensitivity analysis for their ranking results.

The Google Project 10^100 Update

Google Project 10^100 was launched on September 24, 2008 in commemoration of the incorporation of Google on September 1998. The term 10^100 is simply a numerical expression of an extremely large number, Googol, where the name Google was coined from. On Google’s 10th birthday, the company has committed to finance a $10,000,000 project that could greatly help more people. Out of more than 150,000 gathered proposals from companies and individuals around the world, the final set of projects to be selected was sapped down to 16 themes with discrete templates on how to implement them using the $10 Million funding.

The following criteria were used by more than 3,000 Googlers in offices around the world in reviewing submitted proposals:

  • Reach: How many people would this idea affect?
  • Depth: How deeply are people impacted? How urgent is the need?Attainability: Can this idea be implemented within a year or two?
  • Efficiency: How simple and cost-effective is your idea?
  • Longevity: How long will the idea’s impact last?

The good thing for now is that we can still have one week to vote from the 16 so the selection will be reduced down to 5. So please cast your vote now from any of the following world-changing ideas:

Predict and minimize medical problems and emergencies through real-time tracking of individuals’ health data and analysis of historical data. Several ideas submitted in multiple languages recommend this concept, offering various ideas about which types of monitors and devices to use; which vital signs to measure (with var ying levels of invasiveness); which diseases and conditions to track; and so on. The idea could work both in the developed world (through wearable, mobile or in-home devices) and in the developing world (via publicly accessible locations and devices ), and the data could be used both to track individuals’ health status and to spot community trends and prevent disease outbreaks.

The Next Google Major Update

SEO Web DesignGoogle major update is a grand evaluation of pages in the web. It is observed to occur every three (3) months. Although Googlebot is crawling millions of pages daily, Google major update determines ranking results for the keywords. This could mean a lot for websites launching SEO campaign – it is the ultimate measure of the effectiveness of the SEO techniques and strategies being used.

Prior to observed statistics on Google crawling rate, this week is supposed to be the schedule of Google major update. It has become noticeable that there are more pages being crawled daily. I usually let Google manage the crawl rate for my sites. Apparently, within this week, crawl rate reached the record high of almost 4,000 pages in just one day.

Website PageRank™

PageRank™ (or simply PR) defines probability distribution of links for page A originally formulated as:

PR(A) = (1-d) + d (PR(T1)/C(T1) + … + PR(Tn)/C(Tn))

where,

  • PR is the PageRank
  • A is the page under evaluation
  • T1, . . . , Tn are pages linking to A
  • d is the damping factor which can be set between 0 and 1 (usually set to 0.85)
  • C(T)’s are number of links going out of page T.

Although there had been major modifications for the PageRank™ Algorithm since Google has been proposed as spider-based alternative search engine, the basic idea lies mainly on how many pages on the web point to a particular page. Pages with higher PR linking to one site will likely increase the site’s PR as well. While pages with no PR value yet seem negligible to add up to the site’s PR points. The next Google major update will determine how many pages, crawled by Googlebot, are linking to the target site and evaluate its PageRank™ value.

Keyword Relevance

Keyword relevance is a measure of how a particular page could provide relevant information on a particular search key. It can be approximated as:

Keyword Relevance = (Keyword Density) x (Keyword Weight)

where,

  • Keyword Density = (Number of times phrase appears in text) / (Number of all words)
  • Keyword Weight = (Calculated based on position )

Estimated Page Relevance

Based on the above hypothetical approximations of PageRank and Keyword Relevance, the page’s relevance to the target keyword can also be simulated. It can be simply illustrated as a product of PR and Keyword Relevance, that is:

~Page Relevance = (PageRank™) x (Keyword Relevancet)

Of course, Google major update is composed of many different algorithms to streamline the most suitable pages to land on the first page of the search engine results pages (SERRPs). The above information can only give some insights on how to conduct an SEO campaign for the target website in response to Google search algorithms and updates. Making your SEO Web Design Googlebot-friendly is just the same as winning half of the battle. The rest would be hardwork.
